What Every Aspiring Doula Needs to Hear ASAP
Here it is… the #1 piece of advice that every aspiring doula needs to hear ASAP…
Stop looking outside of yourself for validation that you’re “good enough” or worthy of greatness.
Instead of waiting for external validation that you’re “ready” to be a birth worker or that you’ve gained enough knowledge or experience… or whatever… I need you to feel it in your souls that you’re already “good enough”.
And I know firsthand that the internet can be a really cruel place, but I NEED you to feel it in your soul that you’re already worthy of doing this work.
I need you to know that everything it takes to be a phenomenal birth worker is already inside of you… because you wouldn’t be reading this if you weren’t born to do this work.
And the next time you hear some bullsh*t on social media that’s trying to bring down new birth workers, just smile and know that whoever is being a bully is operating from a place of scarcity.
Those bullies are SCARED of you, and JEALOUS of you, and ENVY you…
But not only do I know that there is more than enough space in birth work for all of us, I know that there are MILLIONS of expecting moms out there who are in desperate desire of our support.
That mom out there who’s daydreaming about someone like you… she doesn’t care that you’re “new”… she’s not asking for your resume… she wants someone whose soul is lit up by doing this work… someone who’s not a bully.
And if you ever doubt yourself as you’re starting your journey into birth work, please know that experience is NOT what makes a great doula. (And honestly, sometimes more “experience” makes it harder to be a good doula because with experience comes more and more assumptions.)
Every birth is so incredibly different, every birth has the power to show us exactly how our assumptions are ass-backward, and attending person A’s birth will in no way prepare you to attend person B’s…
The foundation of birth work is the ability to sit in present moment awareness and just BE.
And you’ll know you’ve absolutely nailed the doula role when you can sit with women without bringing your assumptions and your own shit into the birth room.
